About the game
There is no music in Book of Spells best online slots initially, only ambient sound. The wind whistles ominously while ravens caw and a witch’s cackle comes and goes in the breeze. It all fits in nicely with the spooky design and night time background. Bare trees create pointed shadows, bats fly through the air and the light in a castle suggests you are not alone.
Then the you spin the slots and an odd little high-pitched sound repeats. It feels very true to the sounds of a one armed bandit but seems oddly out of place here, undercutting the moodier thematic ambience that has gone before it.
As far as the Gameboard is concerned, it’s business as usual for slots online. 5 reels and 3 rows give space for 15 symbols that the player can hope to match. The standard symbols have three distinct value categories: low, mid and high.
The 5 low symbols are based on a deck of cards with the values of 10, J, Q, K and A. Each find themselves in a bejewelled font and a single block colour. Two mid-level value symbols are a purple witches hat adorned with gold stars and a luminescent green potion in an ornate bottle. At the top is the witch’s cauldron, filled with a curious amber nectar and the witch herself, a pale, fiery haired woman, complete with hat and spider necklace.
Apart from that, the titular book of spells fills in as both WILD and SCATTER. It’s surprising that the witch doesn’t feature as a WILD but there is a special WILD alternative in the bonus free spins round.
3 or more book of spells SCATTERS on the Gameboard trigger free spins. These are always granted in blocks of 10 but further spins can be triggered even during the free spins round. The game selects a random symbol to become WILD during the bonus round.
Should that symbol appear enough times in any given spin, it will expand to cover a whole reel, increasing your chances of big wins on subsequent spins. This is good to hear but in a game with only 9 winning paylines, you need every chance you can get!

The verdict
Book of Spells is another casino game that refuses to deviate in any significant way from the average slots online. Its theme naturally provides it with an element of seasonality but there is little else here to keep you coming back for more.
